Our 1970's House Makeover Part 7: The Painted Door & Stair Rail

and my get-go experience alongside a pigment sprayer Our 1970's House Makeover Part 7: The Painted Door & Stair Rail
Hey ya'll! So, recollect a month agone when I debuted the novel stair rail? Well, I genuinely persuasion I would live able to larn everything painted inward a calendar week or so. And too thus it basically took me a calendar month to larn it all finished.
It's ridiculous, I know.

I've come upwards to convey that this volition never live a weblog that makes things await quick too easy.
Welcome to the opposite blog. Take off your shoes. Stay awhile. Enjoy the disaster that unfolds inward every post.

So anyways, let's rewind a petty chip too remind y'all what the novel stair track looked similar later it was get-go built.

A few of y'all suggested leaving the railing equally the raw woods too only adding a topcoat, but nosotros built the stair track using woods that wasn't all uniform, knowing that nosotros wanted to pigment it to stand upwards for the trim. Here's a unopen upwards of the railing to exhibit y'all what I mean.

So, knowing that it had to live painted, I decided that I wanted to pigment the stair track using our novel pigment sprayer, thinking that it would build the icon procedure a full breeze.

Welcome to my worst persuasion ever.
Also known equally that ane fourth dimension I turned my solid into the laid of Dexter.

Since I had never used a pigment sprayer before, I had no persuasion how much overspray was involved. When I took the sprayer exterior to assay out it for the get-go time, nosotros rapidly realized that I was going to direct keep to comprehend the entire get-go flooring alongside plastic.

So, I used this materials called Tape'n Drape  (affiliate link), which is basically a bunch of plastic sheeting attached to tape. It made things thus much easier, but it even thus took me almost three hours to record everything up.
Only because I tend to plough into a wing stuck on a wing strip whenever record is involved.

So, nosotros played alongside the pigment sprayer for awhile outside, making certain nosotros had a full general agreement of how to purpose the thing.
And too thus it was fourth dimension to tackle the stair rail.

I applied the get-go coat of primer to the expanse nigh the stairs, too frankly, it wasn't equally slowly equally I persuasion it would be. Jesse witnessed me struggling too offered to help.
And that's when I handcuffed him to the pigment sprayer.

Luckily, I came upwards alongside a dainty innovation to agree a sail of foam board on the other side of the track spell spraying to halt some of the overspray. This sped things upwards too eventually the entire railing was covered inward a coat of primer too ii coats of semi-gloss paint.
For those of y'all who similar specifics: First I used woods filler on all of the boom holes too and thus sanded them level alongside the wood. Then, I caulked all of the gaps inward the woods alongside DAP. Then, nosotros used Kilz primer too Behr Premium Plus pigment inward Ultra Pure White alongside a semi-gloss finish.
And I sanded the entire affair alongside 220 grit earlier priming too and thus ane time again later the primer had dried.

So, if I'm beingness honest, Jesse basically only painted the whole thing. I by too large ran around similar a crazy someone checking for overspray evidence.
And I think the below moving icon best sums upwards my usefulness during this time...
Wearing oversized homo pants too a mask, staring at a flip flop.

Eventually, the stair track seemed to live adequately covered too the task seemed done. It was nighttime at this point, but equally far equally nosotros could tell, everything looked great.
So, nosotros pulled upwards all of the plastic sheeting too went to sleep.

And here's where the plot thickens.
I woke upwards the adjacent twenty-four hours too it was incredibly evident that nosotros should have applied ane to a greater extent than coat of paint.
I wanted to run away. And never return.

And since there's no means I was going to recreate the taping too draping incident, or enquire Jesse to taste some other fun-filled twenty-four hours alongside a pigment sprayer, I spent a few long evenings alongside a paintbrush too tiny foam roller applying ane terminal coat.
There were a few moments where I felt a petty Britney-with-umbrella-crazy, but inward the end, fine tuning the terminal coat wasn't the worst affair inward the world.

Eventually the stair track was totally done, it looked great, my sanity somehow survived, too it was fourth dimension to motion on to the door.

The door was a full disaster later the stain debacle, too definitely needed a novel coat of paint.

I realize how gross that is.

So, I laid upwards my shower mantle dropcloth, wiped downward the door, sanded it a little, too started testing out some dark pigment colors.

I eventually settled on Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze, a actually corking subdued dark that goes actually good alongside only almost anything.

And too thus I also replaced the quondam hinges, door knob, deadbolt, too door sweep alongside upgraded satin nickel ones.
That lonely made a large difference.

And here's the finished product.

In instance you're wondering, the walls are Benjamin Moore Simply White too the trim back is Behr Ultra Pure White. And yes, I real much desire to supersede the 1970's sliding drinking glass door alongside some double doors that don't require floppy vertical blinds. Baby steps. :)

Now all that's left inward the entryway is to install trim back around the floors too stairs, discovery a rug, too re-assemble the nook. But for now, I'm only thus happy alongside this petty space.
I've questioned myself a lot during this renovation, thus it's a dainty feeling to only dearest something correct from the start.

Plus, all it takes is a tiny petty glance at this earlier moving icon to recollect only how far this petty expanse has come.
We've painted the walls, painted the door, replaced the floors, replaced the stairs, built a novel stair rail, upgraded the calorie-free fixture too door hardware, replaced the switch plate, too converted the cupboard into a nook.
And soon, at that topographic point volition live build novel trim.
I swear.

And I direct keep ane to a greater extent than earlier moving icon that's totally embarrassing, but kinda hilarious. And it reminds me that I'm going to neglect a lot earlier I always succeed. And that's how it's supposed to be.

This is a moving icon of the entryway nook from almost 4 years agone when I get-go decided to convey off the cupboard doors. I recollect thinking it was brilliant, too I recollect Jesse mentioning that it would build a dainty puppet theatre.

So, anyways, to those of y'all who write me too tell that y'all don't know where to start....the answer is somewhere. Start somewhere, build mistakes, proceed going, too you'll live surprised at how much y'all tin displace do!

And that's all for today, ya'll!

I'll live dorsum soon to portion whichever ane of my ongoing projects I complete upwards next! :) 'Til then!
